Get Up and help end Australia’s Education Lottery!

Gonski. It’s the name that’s been dominating headlines for months.

But what exactly is the plan behind the man?

We’ve teamed up with Jane Caro and Chris Bonnor, co-authors of What Makes a Good School, to explain why the Gonski Review represents the best pathway to a quality education for every Australian child.

Watch Jane and Chris explain why our system is in desperate need of an overhaul and how Gonski does this.

http://www.getup.org.au/everychild-qld

Education is one generation’s promise to the next. The expert panel on education chaired by businessman David Gonski has laid out a way for us to make good on that promise. It’s common sense: by improving access to quality education for every Australian, our entire society stands to gain.

But who really gives a Gonski? Turns out, most Australians do,1 including the vast majority of educators, parents and students in the know. For good reason, as our current system is in need of repair.

You’ve probably heard comments from Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Shadow Education Minister Christopher Pyne, basically amounting to, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. If only. Truth is, the Review uncovered some hard truths about a system that currently offers amazing choice for a select few, but enshrines inequity for many, many more – limiting the potential of our most vulnerable children.
The gap between our best and worst performing students is widening every year. In fact, inequality in Australia’s schooling system is higher than in similar countries in the OECD, and far less equal than it should be: disadvantaged students are a full two years behind their peers.

Research shows our education system as a whole is slipping behind other nations in the global economy. In 2000, Australia ranked second in the world for reading and scientific literacy, and third for maths. A further study in 2009 found Australian students had fallen to seventh in reading and scientific literacy, and thirteenth in maths. We were the only high-performing country to show a significant decline in reading literacy performance since 2000.2

The bottom line? Our current education system is creating winners and losers out of kids. Especially students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, Indigenous children, children with disabilities, children who don’t speak English as a first language and kids who live in remote areas. The “losers” in the unfair education lottery are the kids that have the most to gain from access to quality education. Right now, one in seven 15-year-olds lack the basic numeracy and literacy skills needed to secure employment.3

So now what?

The Prime Minster is currently doing the rounds, negotiating with every state Premier. Your Premier Campbell Newman has so far rejected signing up for the Gonski education reforms, despite growing evidence that Queenslanders support them.4 Don’t let him put Queensland’s kids at a disadvantage.

Add your name to the petition now so Mr Newman receives the message loud and clear – all Queensland children deserve access to a high standard of education.

http://www.getup.org.au/everychild-qld

Because while addressing inequality and lifting the academic standards for every Australian child seems like a no brainer, the truth is reforms could be gone-ski unless we make it impossible for State Premiers and Tony Abbott to walk away. Mr Abbott has already said that he won’t support it unless the other state and territory leaders get on board quickly.

Let’s get this landmark reform over the line. Sign and share this crucial petition today, as we gear up for rallies and further actions to hold the Coalition to the promise that they’ll back Gonski in QLD if they win the next election.

Access to a good education shouldn’t be a lottery based on where you were born, where you live or how much your parents earn; and we have some work to do before an Australian education is once again a mark of quality for every child, and a point of pride for our nation.

If our politicians don’t capitalise on this once in a generation opportunity for lasting, transformative reform thIGGen we will continue our slide down the list of OECD countries and continue to enshrine inequality within our system. We can correct the course before it’s too late. Show where you stand: funding better, more equitable education isn’t a line item cost, it’s an investment in our future.

Thanks for signing on,
the GetUp team.

PS: It shouldn’t take a large grassroots community campaign to convince our state and Federal leaders to commit to funding a better, fairer education system for all. But it’s becoming clear that’s exactly what it will take. Now’s the time to let every Premier know that we don’t want our kids left behind. Our friends at the I Give a Gonski campaign are holding events with parents, teachers and community members in capital cities across the country this Saturday. Free garden mulch giveaway!

Garden mulch will be made available to residents free of charge from Cairns Regional Council’s waste transfer stations this weekend.

The annual mulch giveaway follows the recent free green waste dCRC Logoisposal period, provided to help residents clean up their yards after the wet season.

Mayor Bob Manning said the free disposal period was well-utilised.

“The waste transfer stations received 1430 tonnes of green waste during that time,” Cr Manning said.

“From that green waste, 7000 cubic metres of garden mulch has been created to be returned to the community free of charge.

“A mulched garden is more resilient over the dry season and requires less watering. It’s also more resistant to weed growth.”

Mulch will be available to collect on Friday, May 24, to Monday, May 27 from the following locations:
· Portsmith Transfer Station (Open 7 days 8.30 am – 5.15pm)
· Smithfield Transfer Station (Mon to Sat 7am – 5.15pm, Sun 9am – 5.15pm)
· Gordonvale Transfer Station (7 days 8.30 am – 5:15pm)
· Killaloe Transfer Station (Mon – Sat 8am – 5.15 pm, Sun 9am – 5.15pm)
· Newell Beach Transfer Station (Mon & Fri 7am – 11:45am, Wed 12pm – 5:45pm, Sat 7am – 5:45pm)
· Babinda Transfer Station (7 days 8.30am – 4.45pm)
Mulch is for domestic use only and can be collected via car, utility, trailer or light truck up to 4 tonnes maximum GVM.

Council staff will be able to assist with loading vehicles using appropriate mechanical equipment.

Cr Manning said. “Others are showcasing our region to the outside world and providing new incentive for people to visit and enjoy our local culture.

“All of these events and initiatives will benefit the local community in some way and I congratulate those people who have brought them to fruition.”‘

The Community Development Grant stream will assist seven projects to the value of $28,000, including suicide prevention workshops, Seniors Week programs and community theatre upgrades.

Under the Sport and Recreation Grant stream, 18 grants totalling almost $42,921 will be presented.

Four applicants were successful in gaining a Climate Change and Sustainability Grant, under which $19,000 has been allocated.

Events grants are separated into three categories: Local Community Festivals and Events; Developmental Events; and Major Events.

“The Community category helps to ensure the smaller events that might have a more limited target market are able to occur, giving variety to our local events calendar,” Cr Manning said.

“Developmental grants are awarded to events that have potential to attract large numbers of people or become self-sufficient, but need a helping hand to get there; and the Major Event category is in support of the events that bring people into our region.”

A total of $110,000 has been allocated across the three Events categories.

2012 Sustainable Living Expo doubled in size

Coordinated by Cairns Regional Council and Tropical North Queensland Tafe, the annual Sustainable Living Expo aims to bring people together to celebrate, learn and have fun.

The 2012 Sustainable Living Expo saw over 2000 people visit the 45 exhibitors who displayed their products and services ranging from renewable energy, permaculture, local tropical foods, upcycled wares and community groups representing conservation, climate change and sustainable living.

The day was a community celebration of sustainability – there were colourful recycled fashion installations by Tafe fashion students and delightful roving performers; local musicians the Montgomery Brothers and Reggae Bliss entertained the crowd. Most popular were the children’s “Junk into Funk” tent and demonstrations every half hour on; how to make your own hot water service, how to make a haybale garden, designing a sustainable home, solar thermal power and more.

Council and Tafe would like to thank everyone involved in the 2012 Expo who helped make the day a wonderful success.

For more information or to register interest for Sustainable Living Expo 2013 please contact Council’s Coordinator Sustainability & Climate Change Maree Grenfell on 4044 3044 or email M.Grenfell@cairns.qld.gov.au.

It’s official – Gordonvale’s Trish is a library favourite!

The public has spoken – Queensland’s favourite librarian is none other than Gordonvale Library’s Trish Richards.

The competition, run by the Australian Library Information Association (ALIA), invited library users to nominate their favourite staff members. An online public vote was then taken to determine the top contenders.

While she missed out on the national title, Trish was thrilled to be named in the state’s top spot.

“It was fantastic just to be nominated so the win was a bit of a shock,” the mum of two said.

“I’m lucky to be in a job I love and where I can inspire other people to enjoy reading as much as I do. A huge thank you for all the wonderful comments and support from library customers and colleagues.”

A library assistant with Cairns Libraries for six years, Trish said she enjoyed the intimacy of the close Trish Richards 039knit rural community at Gordonvale Library.

“I know most of the families and have the opportunity to build a rapport with them,” she said. “I love seeing children pick up a book and really enjoy reading it and then watching their love of books develop as they get older.

“I feel like I’m contributing something positive to their lives that will stay with them as they grow up.”

Mayor Bob Manning and Council CEO Peter Tabulo have joined in the chorus of congratulations.

“It’s people like Trish who give that little bit extra to really contribute to the community. Her award is very much deserved,” Cr Manning said.

Mr Tabulo added, “This award is representative of the quality of service that exists in all Cairns Libraries branches. I congratulate Trish on this fantastic achievement and extend that sentiment to all libraries staff.”
